Our curriculum ensures that knowledge and investigative skills are built upon progressively each year.
The science curriculum provides:
- Opportunities to explore and investigate whilst giving the children the knowledge and information linked to their work.
- Consistent use of scientific vocabulary.
- Ongoing opportunities to apply learned skills and knowledge across the curriculum.
Science at Hallow
“The important thing is to never stop questioning. ”
Intent
Our curriculum intent for Science reflects the purpose and aims of the national curriculum by helping our pupils to develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. It inspires them to develop an understanding of nature, processes and methods of Science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer questions about the world around them. This will support them to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
Our curriculum is sequenced into long-term and medium-term plans ensuring there is clear skills progression which supports pupils in knowing more and remembering more. There is appropriate progression for vocabulary in place for each phase of learning, which builds on prior learning.
Implementation
As part of our planning process teachers refer to the following documents:
- National Curriculum
- Hallow Progression grids
- Hallow Long-term and medium term plan
Teachers plan a cycle of lessons that link to previously taught skills within the science area of study ready to build on these. They will provide opportunity to explore and investigate whilst giving the children the knowledge and information linked to their work. Specify key vocabulary will be used and its meaning explained. This process will enable children to work interactively with the teacher acting as the facilitator.
Impact
Our Science curriculum is high-quality, well taught and planned to demonstrate progression. We regularly monitor the impact of our curriculum through the use of pupil voice, work produced and learning walks. Through our monitoring the pupils will be able to show a developed understanding of the scientific knowledge and skills of children at an age-appropriate level. They will also be able to demonstrate a secure understanding of the key techniques and vocabulary used for each key area of the science curriculum. They will display confidence in discussing science, their own work and identifying their own strengths and areas for development.
