Projects we have completed demonstrate what we know – future projects decide what we will learn.

Intent

Our curriculum intent for Design and Technology reflects the purpose and aims of the national curriculum. It is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject that uses creativity and imagination. Pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs wants and values. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.

Implementation

As part of our planning process teachers refer to the following documents:

  • National Curriculum
  • Hallow Progression grids
  • Hallow Long-term and medium-term plan

Teachers plan a cycle of lessons that link to previously taught skills within the design and technology area of study ready to build on these. They will provide opportunity to explore and develop their skills whilst giving the children the knowledge and information linked to their work. Specific key vocabulary will be used and its meaning explained. Children will then explore how to evaluate and test their ideas and those of others.

Impact

Our Design and Technology curriculum is high-quality, well taught and planned to demonstrate progression. We regularly monitor the impact of our curriculum through the use of pupil voice, work produced and learning walks. Through our monitoring the pupils will be able to show a developed understanding of design and technology knowledge and skills of children at an age-appropriate level. They will also be able to demonstrate a secure understanding of the key techniques and vocabulary used for each key area of the curriculum. They will display confidence in discussing and evaluating their own work and identifying their own strengths and areas for development.
